How to Calculate Calories in Wine

Not only is SYLTBAR significantly lower in sugar content than other well known sparkling wine brands, but its calorie count is also largely different. How do we know this for sure? The University of Miami Diabetes Research Institute actually conducted a test to compare the glucose levels in SYLTBAR against 80 other sparkling wine brands. Through their studies, they were also able to calculate the calories of SYLTBAR and the other brands, by using the average alcohol and residual sugar levels with this formula: (Volume (mL) * ABV * 8 * 7 calories/gram) / 1000

How many calories in Prosecco

Here’s how they broke it down for Mr SYLTBAR:

*Alcohol By Volume

*8 calories/1 gram/Sugar

*7 calories/ 1 gram/ Alcohol

166 :1000ml =0.166 x 7.5 = 1.25 x 4 = 4.98 : 4.24 = 1.18

661 :1000ml =0.661 x 7.5 = 4.96 x 4 = 19.84 : 4.24 = 4.68

4.68-1.18 = 3.5

177 x 11.5 x 7 x 3.5 = 49 calories

Calorie Calculation for Mrs SYLTBAR Sparkling Rose

Here’s how they broke it down for Mrs SYLTBAR:

*Alcohol By Volume

*8 calories/1 gram/Sugar

*7 calories/ 1 gram/ Alcohol

186 :1000ml =0.186 x 7.5 = 1.40 x 4 = 5.58 : 4.24 = 1.32

812 :1000ml =0.812 x 7.5 = 6.09 x 4 = 24.36 : 4.24 = 5.75

5.75-1.32 = 4.4

177 x 11.5 x 7 x 4.4 = 63 calories

The ‘166’ noted is the amount of glucose found in Mr: 166mg per 1000ml. To put this in perspective for you, let’s look at the numbers the University of Miami Diabetes Research Institute found for one of the most widely known brands of Prosecco: Ruffino. A 6 ounce glass of Ruffino Prosecco Extra Dry is 116 calories, and the amount of glucose is 703mg. That is a huge difference!

It’s important to remember that there is a difference between the sugar that develops naturally from the grapes and other added sugars that come into the picture after the fermentation process. There will always be natural sugar, referred to as residual sugar, in wine because grapes have fructose. Keep this in mind if you see a wine brand that calls itself “sugar free.” A wine that claims to have no sugar had to go through some kind of chemical process to remove its natural sugars.

No Added Sugar Wines

Adding sugar is a way for the larger mass produced wine companies to save time and money. Instead of letting the grapes fully develop, the fermentation is stopped short and sugars or sweeteners are added in order to trick your taste buds into thinking that these wines taste good.  These big brands are not required to disclose the amount of sugar they add to the wine, which is why there is no way you’d know about it. Another shortcut some wine companies may take to save money is using second quality grapes to produce wine. These are grapes that are generally deemed unworthy by traditional winemakers and tossed away. What do you get when you use low quality grapes? Low quality wine — which is why adding sugar in this case is a must.

SYLTBAR Diabetes Live Test

You might be wondering why there is such a big emphasis put on glucose. There are four main types of simple sugars: glucose, fructose (sugar from fruit), sucrose (table sugar) and lactose (sugar from milk). Glucose is the main type of sugar that is found in our blood stream and carried to cells in the body as a primary source of energy. Glucose levels are the most important numbers to be concerned with when it comes to alcohol because of how your blood sugar can be affected. The University of Miami Diabetes Research Institute’s studies not only found that SYLTBAR glucose level was so much less than other brands, but also that there was no blood sugar spike in test subjects when they drank SYLTBAR. Note: This study was done under direct doctor supervision, and does not constitute medical advice. Please consult your doctor if you have any underlying health concerns.

Blood sugar spikes, especially if it happens repeatedly, can become harmful. High blood sugar can lead to various health issues involving the kidney, heart, nerves, and eyesight. It is normal to see small spikes in blood sugar after eating or drinking certain things, but it’s when the spikes are larger than normal and occur too often that problems can arise.

If you were ever skeptical about the calorie count listed for Mr, you can now sit back and enjoy a few glasses, knowing that it is not a myth. Mr really is only 49 calories per 6 ounces! The same formula was used for Mrs Sparkling Rosé too, and her calorie count is 63 calories per 6 ounces — a little higher than Mr because there is a little more residual sugar, but still a huge difference from other brands!
